Saqib Jafarey

In addition to joining CDPR as Fellow, Saqib Jafarey is (1) Professor of Economics, City St George’s, University of London, (2) a Founding Fellow of the Royal Economic Society, United Kingdom and (3) Associate Fellow of the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS). His research areas are macroeconomics and development economics. His development research focuses on Pakistan and its South Asian neighbors, particularly in relation to migration, climate change adaptation, child labour and gender inequality. His macroeconomic research focuses on tax and trade policy, growth anomalies and the monetary and fiscal implications of market imperfections. He has an established record of interdisciplinary collaboration in both areas. He has been Co-I on two major EU-funded inter-disciplinary projects, FOC (€3.8M) and CRISIS (€4.6M) on crises in banking networks. He was also one of the founders of the South Asia Network for Displacement and Development (SANDD), formed in 2019 to increase interdisciplinary collaboration and regional cooperation in research on climate change adaptation. His current projects are: (1) introducing and evaluating the social and economic impact of Climate Smart Agriculture in Baltistan, (2) estimating the distributional impacts of simplifying the tax assessment rules of Punjab’s urban property tax and (3) the impact of migrant remittances on Pakistan’s growth performance.
